Case Notes

These guys are bozos. I sent the following letter to them:

"Yes I know this is a random, unsolicited piece of email but
you might actually be interested in what it has to say."

You are wrong. Remove [MY EMAIL] from any of your
mailing lists and let me know that you have received this email.
If I do not receive a response, I will lodge a complaint with your
ISP and then the Internic. In addition to being rude and a violation
of netiquette, mass email spammings are also illegal:

[QUOTED LEGAL CODE]
I received the following reply from root (who apparently was the spammer):

Your hateful acknowledgement has been read, and your name has been removed
from our lists.

1. Email "spammings" are not illegal, as recently demonstrated by court
rulings against America Online.

2. U.S. laws apply to U.S. companies. This is not a U.S. company.

3. GET A LIFE!!

My reply was:

>from our lists.

Good.

>1. Email "spammings" are not illegal, as recently demonstrated
>by court rulings against America Online.

The courts have not made a decision yet on that case as it has
not gone to trial.

>2. U.S. laws apply to U.S. companies. This is not a U.S. company.

If US laws do not, internet ethics should.

>3. GET A LIFE!!
Try developing some professionalism.

Here are three sites that maintain lists of users who do not
want to receive unsolicited mail. They will remove those addresses
from your email lists as a free service. Maybe that will stop
more mean people from sending you hateful mail.

http://pages.ripco.com:8080/~glr/nojunk.html
http://drsvcs.com/nospam/
http://www.directnet.com/~spiegel/

You can read some more about why people might react "hatefully"
to your mail at the following URL:

http://www.mcs.com/~jcr/junkemail.html#FAQ
And the final conclusion of this saga is their response:

I actually wanted to thank you for this - I had no knowledge of these lists,
and will apply them immediately. Sorry for the continued communication, but
I wanted to let you know that your efforts are appreciated.

Hi!

Yes I know this is a random, unsolicited piece of email but you might
actually be interested in what it has to say.

We have developed a system which enables you to receive your email on your
fax machine or pager. Simple as that. No more messing around going online
to check for mail, and no more wondering if email is waiting for you when
you are out and about. We can send your email to your fax machine or pager,
instantly. It's fast, it's cheap, and it's reliable. You can assign a new
email address to your fax machine, or even keep the address you already have.
