Case Notes

This one was confusing, it looks like the mail came from an AT&T site, but the mail responder was hosted by earthlink.net. UUNet BTW wishes to make clear that while earthlink.net mail may go through its hubs, they are not UUNet customers.

I sent the following mail:

This sort of tactic is not appreciated. Please remove the following
email address from your mailing lists:

[MY EMAIL ADDRESS]

If you do not personally maintain these mailing lists, then you
should contact the people sending out the bulk email and inform
them that they will piss off a lot of people if they do not
include a method for users to permanently remove themselves
from the lists.
I received the folliwing reply from support@earthlink.net:

Spam or spamming on the Internet is defined as sending unsolicited
advertisements, particularly those hype-filled buy-me-now ones, to
inappropriate Usenet newsgroups or to lists of people who didn't ask
for there message.

If an EarthLink subscriber does it, and enough complaints are
received, the account is canceled. We must follow the rules of the
networks we are allowed to use, and we will not condone spamming in
any case.

If you have any information about a spammer please let us handle the
situation for you.

I have sent your information to:
abuse@earthlink.net

Sorry if this has caused you any inconvenience. If you need further
assistance, please let us know.
My response to them was:

I will admit that the email solicitation I received was not particularly
obnoxious as far as most go, and that it does not fit in the category of
"get-rich-quick" scams. However, the amount of unsolicited mail that I
now receive is growing unmanageable and I do not appreciate sites attempting
to increase their traffic by sending out millions of pieces of email to
accomplish it. It should not be difficult to imagine what the results
will be if this tactic continues to grow in popularity. I do not send
out mail to all of your users whenever I put up a new web site,
and I believe that you should regulate your customers to do the same.
